Transient heat loss of water tanks using CFD

We are a leading company in the heat pump and water heater industry, committed to delivering high-quality and innovative products to our customers. We are now looking for a dedicated and skilled student to join our team and ensure our products meet all regulatory standards.

BACKGROUND

NIBE products are exposed to heavy testing to ensure that the products deliver world class performance. During development phase, testing takes up a large part of the project time as it is a time expensive activity.
With higher competition in the heat pump industry, the demands on efficiency, quality and “faster time to market” have increased. Therefore, NIBE has since 3 years back invested in a CFD team, to work alongside testing and the projects to help NIBE cut its development time and cost.
The CFD team is now looking for a student for thesis work - Transient heat loss of water tanks using CFD. Today, we have challenges to match test data with simulation results due to lack of optimized methods.

ABOUT THE TEAM

The NIBE CFD team consists of 4 engineers with different backgrounds covering building energy systems, aerospace and automotive. We have expertise in both 3D and system simulation.

SCOPE

The thesis project is suitable for one person. Location: Trollhättan
Duration: 20 weeks and start: 2025-01-13 (flexible)

OBJECTIVES

• Research existing methods/literature for calculating heat loss of insulated water tanks for standing heat loss and dynamic charging load cases
• Propose suitable turbulence models, mesh requirements and solver settings
• Carry out CFD simulations to compare/validate method(s) with test data
• Create generic Star-CCM+ template to be used at NIBE
DOES THIS APPLY TO YOU?
• MSc student in Physics, Energy, Mehanical Engineering, or a related field
• Knowledge in fluid dynamics, heat transfer and CFD
• Previous experience with ANSA and Star-CCM+ is an advantage
• Collaborative mindset and effective communication skills
• Fluency in English, both spoken and written
