Master's Projects – HIBEAM & NNBAR
HIBEAM-NNBAR is a proposed two-stage program of experiments at the European Spallation Source (ESS) designed to search for neutrons converting into antineutrons and/or sterile neutrons. Such an observation would indicate baryon number violation, a fundamental condition for baryogenesis, the physical process that is hypothesized to have taken place during the early universe to produce baryonic asymmetry, i.e. the imbalance of matter (baryons) and antimatter (antibaryons) in the observed universe. In addition to shedding light on the baryon asymmetry of the universe, neutron conversions would provide the first falsification outside of the neutrino sector of the Standard Model (SM) of particle physics.
The Chalmers HIBEAM–NNBAR team contributes to a wide range of activities within the experiment. Our work spans, among other things, the development of the annihilation detector and the software framework, both of which are currently undergoing rapid progress within the collaboration.
Examples of projects:- particle identification and event selection using machine learning techniques
- study of alternative annihilation detectors for the experiment using different geometries and materials
- development of fast detector simulation techniques
- development of background suppression techniques (e.g. removal of cosmic ray events)
- simulation studies of the WASA detector for HIBEAM
- benchmarking of the detector prototypes under construction
